JB’s Smokeshack

Oh BBQ god’s, I must have done something good because you’ve led me to a wonderful example of how to do BBQ right. JB’s Smokeshack on Johns Island (near Charleston, SC) is just damn good. I had their que at a party a while back and I remember it being good, but to really check it out I needed to visit their restaurant. As soon as I walked in I pretty much knew it was going to be good. After my recent less that stellar experience at Jed’s BBQ in Greensboro I was happy to see their motto “The flavor is in the meat, sauce on the side”. There were two giant Tea dispensers right at the counter, a buffet with a number of southern sides, numerous newpaper and magazine articles praising the place, and a hand written menu on the wall. There were a few folks eating there ranging from a white couple in their 80’s to a few younger African-American kids. I tend to find that the more diverse the customers the better the que, this proved true once again.

I ordered a couple of their large BBQ sandwiches, a pint of slaw and a pound of their pulled que. I didn’t try any sides on the buffet because I was there for the que, but I’ll be heading there for lunch pretty frequently I’m sure so I’ll see about them later. It’s a good 45 min drive from JB’s Smokeshack to my house and It was tough work to not dive in and eat my and my wife’s sandwich before I made it home.

First thing I noticed about the meat was it tasted like it had been smoked prefectly. You could see the smoke in the brown crust and really taste the hickory. The meat was just a hair dryer than I usually like but man it was good. It was pulled fine and slightly chopped. They offer 3 different sauces (all served on the side of course) vinegar, spicy and SC mustard (actually there might be a 4th sauce, I can’t remember). I ordered some of the vinegar and the spicy. The vinegar sauce was exactly what I was looking for. It’s close to the Lexington style sauces that I used to eat as a kid growing up in Winston-Salem. The spicy sauce was thicker and reminded me of a Memphis or KC style with a good portion of tomato, also very good. It’s probably a good thing that it is as far as it is from my house because I could see myself eating there way to frequently.

  1. Yeah, that looks good. While I’m not really big on the vinegar sauce (I think taste in sauce is largely a function of where you grew up), I certainly agree that sauce won’t do much for poor-tasting meat.

Oh, and why are the good BBQ places so far from the house? I can get “okay” BBQ in Florence, but to get the really good stuff I’ve gotta drive at least an hour (one way!).

  2. Oh I 100% agree that taste in sauce is directly related to where you grew up. I love Lexington, NC vinegar since I grew up in Winston-Salem which is right next to Lex. I have no idea why everything good is so far from your house. I’m still panning on heading out to Sweatmans sometime soon…..about a 1 hour or more drive.

I will be traveling to NC,SC and GA this October.
I would love to try some authentic BBQ while I am there.
I would also like to go to a BBQ festival or cook off.
Someone suggested Sweatmans for good BBQ and someone
else suggested the Big Pig Jig for a festival.
    What are your suggestions?
    Thanks
