Noah’s Mill Bourbon

I was perusing the bottled libations at the neighborhood liquor store and saw this tall wine bottle full of a dark bourbon and figured I should probably suck it up and give it a taste. Sacrificing for the blog you know.

Noah’s Mill is distilled by in Bardstown, KY by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, INC. (formerly Willet Distilling Company). It is a Bourbon that has been aged 15 years in wooden barrels and hand bottled at 114.3 proof. It’s definitely not the cheapest whiskey I’ve ever purchased (I think I spent $36.99 for 750 ml) but it’s not the most expensive and what the hell, why not. The first thing I can tell you about Noah’s Mill is that it might bethe darkest Bourbon I’ve poured in a long time if not ever. It has a deep rich reddish brown color that strongly points to what you can expect in its flavor. The high alcohol content is evident in the nose as is dark brown sugar. The first taste is surprisingly smoother than the 114.3 proof would let you believe. It’s actually very smooth, more so than some other high proof small batch bourbons I’ve tried. The taste is strong with with caramel and some dark dried fruit flavors but nothing overpowering. This find is a huge wonderful surprise for me because it is one of the favorite bourbons I’ve tried. I’ve always been a Jack Daniels drinker (yes I know not Bourbon) but recently have been branching out to small batch bourbons when I head to the liquor store. Knob Creek, Bakers, Bookers, Woodford Reserve are all go-to bottles for me but I think I’ve found a winner. This bourbon can stand alongside some of the best Single Malt Scotch Whiskeys I’ve tasted. The character and depth of flavor is simply amazing. My understanding is that Noah’s Mill has limited distribution so if you see a bottle at the local store, grab one and give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

We will look for some in our neck of the woods. As I’ve mentioned, I love Blantons and when it isn’t available Woodford Reserve is my alternate.

Speaking os single malts, have you tasted Glenfarclas? http://www.glenfarclas.co.uk/single-malt-whisky/index.php This is a Speyside single malt that they bottle in an amazing array of ages - from “cask strength” to 30 year (brother is it dear $$$) - the 25 is my personal favorite.

I have completed rigorous scientific testing and I agree. Noah’s Mill is hands down the best Bourbon I’ve ever had.

Put Noah’s up against Elijah Craig 18-year-old Single Barrel Bourbon, the oldest Single Barrel Bourbon available in the world…and Noah’s blew it away.

What do they do at Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, Ltd. to get that raisin aftertaste? This is one complex series of solutes in ETOH!

However, there appears to be a few “special runs” of my previous favorite Blanton’s. We will have to compare Blanton’s Gold, Silver and “special reserve” but those are available only, as the Blanton’s site states: “Please note: Blanton’s Silver Edition is only available domestically in select Duty Free organizations, located within airport facilities.”

    What a crock!

Happy Labor Day weekend - ’tis a shame how much good food will be butchered by amateurs - but Carbon has its place in our diet.

I’ve been curious about this Noah character for quite some time. The only problem is I always have my bourbon brought back from someone who has just been over to the mainland. If I don’t like it, I’m like “awe man this sucks, I could’ve had a bottle of Elijah 12 (best I’ve tried to date).”

I personally hate jack, jim, wild turkey, maker’s mark, knob creek, etc. Sweet dixie boy corn syrup crap.

Blanton and the boys (buffalo trace, woodford reserve), however, are great stuff. And I saw three bottles of Blanton’s silver edition for sale in Dublin (albeit riduculously over-priced) a few weeks back so… I don’t know what that domestic only nonsense is all about.

If you can give it a try I would. Mind you it is a Bourbon Whiskey so it will have some of that sweet nature to it, but alongside it has a wonderfully complex character.

Binny’s Beverage Depot has this all the time. I recently purchased 2 of 8 bottles off the shelve. I work there so with my discount it was quite nice. I recommend this bourbon to ANY who drinks, even more to those who like whiskey especially.

A fantastic bourbon with a distinctive colour and flavour. I would also recommend Basil Hayden to anyone who enjoys Noah’s Mill. A pleasant find indeed for any true bourbon lover.
